One of the most impressive movies of the last decades is for me The English Patient, a drama set in the Second World War times. Gabriel Yared's music has a very important role both in the movie and also in the making of this painting. One of the soundtrack's tunes has given the name for it. I was in a tight spot when I started making this one. The long covid symptoms were frightening but also totally exhausting. I had commissions with which I was struggling because I felt unable to work but for short moments at a time. Alienation and desperation started getting very real. Painting no longer brought me satisfaction, on the contrary.

What was needed was a side-project that might bring back some routine and confidence. I had already painted one scene in this movie with Kristin Scott Thomas but I hadn't been satisfied with it and subsequently painted over it. This time, I chose a small canvas with crooked frame (cf. the image). I didn't even bother to gesso it but only lightly sanded the canvas, aiming for a rough and rustic look. Timewise I decided to allow no more than a couple of night's timeframe.

This painting of Scott Thomas and Ralph Fiennes at the mercy of a desert sandstorm was finished in 2023 but I chose to publish it on the Valentine's Day 2024. The price is cheap because of the crooked frame—if you have it reframed that of course doesn't matter.
