At the moment of painting this I had two commissioned paintings underway that feature furry friends (pet dogs) and I felt the need for encouragement. This was a great practise—not to downplay this work saying so. Secondly, I have always loved deer and at least one family of them lives next to my childhood home, where my brother now lives. I've managed to capture a few photos of them but this reference came across on some nature program. It is a screencapture from that video.

I also very much liked the bokeh effect and wanted to see a strong unsharpness in this one too. The painting is a combination of quite accurate brush marks and ones that are more coarse. The warm tone of evening light is essential for this work.
