The idea behind this painting is to depict a strong-willed woman from the 18th century who bows to no-one. She live in a totally chauvinistic world in which by law she is the property of her husband and practically not able to own anything substantial herself.

The very loosely painted milieau of this painting was taken mostly from a photo I took in Kruununhaka neighborhood in Helsinki (on Oikokatu, to be exact). My thoughts, however, were in a Bawarian small town and hence I used the photo only as inspiration.
