Oil painting on 50 x 60 x 2 cm canvas, ready to be hung with white borders.
It's been a while since I last saw the movie The Painted Veil and once again it had an impact, enough to initiate two paintings that I worked with simultaneously. I did remember the photography of this movie is in its own class but nevertheless it surprised again. The script is based on W. Somerset Maugham's book which gives it an old-timey, deep storyline and the excellent cast perfects this masterpiece. The central motif in both of my paintings is the dreamlike journey that the main characters are taking down a Chinese river, amid towering limestone mountains. A souring mistake-of-a-marriage is at its turning point and they have found each other, for the first time for real.
Already for long I've admired the music of this movie and also now it inspired the name of this painting. Alexandre Desplat is the composer. You can listen to the song on the video below. In the painting I tried to reach the flow of this classical piece and for that reason I didn't follow the screencapture reference rigidly. The unsharpness, "fogginess", creates a fairytale-like and vintage atmosphere.
On the right side you'll also find a smaller image of the other painting titled The Painted Veil. Click to enlarge it.
