Oil colour on 46 x 55 cm prefab canvas.
The inspiration for this painting came from TV series Myrskyluodon Maija that has been very popular and respected in Finland ever since its debut in the 1970s. It depicts the harsh life of a hundred years ago in the breathtaking archipelago of Åland islands. I watched it recently for the third time and took a screenshot which was the source of this painting. The colours of Åke Lindman's beautiful cinematography are unfortunately nowadays quite washed out, therefore forcing me to imagine the colour space quite completely from my own preferences. Åland's cliffs are usually very redish ("salmon") but I didn't want to tie this painting too much into any single location. Instead, I went more with the harmony between blue skies and orange tones (opposing colours in colour wheel). Eventually I ended taking other liberties too.
The father of this young girl has promised to return from fishing before night. When the girl has noticed storm clouds rising in the horizon she has hurried to the boat shed to wait. Luckily she sees the familiar sail approaching—father is safe.
