Lady of the Lake

2021

Oil painting on 46 x 55 cm canvas, ready to hang as it is.

I'm a fan of the English Prerafaelites and I love the mythological paintings of John Everett Millais and John William Waterhouse from the 19th century. The atmosphere and use of color in these works is unique. They also contain an element of fun theatricality, grandiosity even, which borders on the humoristic—at least for the modern viewer. The accomplishments of this period and particularly of Romanticism were a precursor to many great things in art. My painting is a small nod to these masters.

Bernard Cornwell's Winter King trilogy of novels about the Arthurian legend manages to find completely new dimensions from this old myth. Those books were an additional inspiration. Nimue, the Lady of the Lake by her many names, is a pivotal character in these books but certainly not as tender a siren as here.

Masha Raymers' royalty free photo (on Pexels) served as reference for this painting, too (see my previous, Misty). But yet again, I modeled the character from my own imagination, preserving only the pose and direction of light. I also decided to go with way less contrast.
