Parsifal and the Eternal Quest

2021

Oilpainting on 46 x 55 cm canvas, ready to hang as it is.

Many of us are searching for something their whole life, some personal Grail. But will we ever reach that? How much will go unnoticed at the same time? What will become of us in the process, ghosts? I have no answers, I'm asking myself too. I wouldn't like to fulfil John Lennon's wise words: "Life is what happens while we're busy making other plans."

This painting is a marriage between the grandiose, over-the-top landscapes of Alfred Bierstadt and quite loose impressionism. Maybe even symbolism? I hate isms, that's not why I make art. You decide what you want to see. I didn't use any reference but let my imagination run free. A couple of my photos have quite similar clouds and now they got boosted with romantical era tones.

Now that it’s published I have to reveal: there was a different concept in my mind for the Templar knight. He was supposed to be semirealistic (not a ”holograph”) and holding a cellphone with a map app showing the way to Grail. Obviously not recognizable because of the size but… Quite cool idea, I guess, but I fell in love with the ghostly figure and stopped there. This obviously deserves a sequel so probably you'll see the original idea there.
