The Pioneer

2021

Oil on 40 x 50 x 1,5 cm prefab canvas, ready to hang as it is (white sides).

The whole painting—particularly the climber—is done in a looser style, almost impressionistic. Viewed from close, the figure nearly disintegrates into its atoms. The mountains remain from our perspective almost eternally but those who play on them still exist, too, as "ghosts" in our images, stories and rolemodels. A black-and-white photo (from 1950s?) served as rough source for this. The climber is Walter Bonatti on Petit Dru, French Alps.

I especially liked imagining this photo in colours. Having moved on those mountains I'd say it isn't far off.

SOLD and won't be duplicated or sold in prints.
