Northern Lyngen from Olderdalen

2019

Oil colour on 19 x 80 x 2 cm pine tree board.

There's a particular pride I feel for this painting. In my humble opinion it depicts this mountain range even better than the bunch of photos I've stitched into one panorama that served as my reference. In nature, this range stretches some 20 kilometers in length, while the highest top, Store Lenangstind, reaches to 1625 m. The fjord on the foreground is Ullsfjorden and I took the photos in 2008 as we waited for ferry in Breivikeidet.

I came across this pine board while cleaning my storage unit. It had functioned as bookshelf for Donald Ducks of my sons. Immediately it occurred to me that this might be a wonderful material for a Lyngen panorama. I gessoed the surface to ensure adhesion of paint until aeons, but not as much as to obscure the beautiful pine texture from gently showing through from under the paint. I also left the sides unpainted, emphasizing the natural beauty of the material. The board itself is "dead straight" and will sit perfectly on the wall.

For some Lyngen fan or mountain lover this will certainly make a unique piece of art. My lifestyle wrapped around climbing began on those mountains in 1993 and therefore they hold a very soft spot inside my heart. When I'm old I hope I'd still be able make countless easy ascents on peaks such as Stortind, the Isskardtinds, Forholtfjellet... The wishlist is long.
