Modern Day Tarzan

It was my original idea for this painting to make it part of a series of small impressionistic paintings but after three hours of work I felt tempted to go towards more traditional realism. Part of the reason for this was that the paint got inconveniently dry in between sessions. At that time my teaching job allowed little time for extra activities. As a result, the painting falls somewhere between those two styles. It has already been varnished now.

This is based on a photo I took at Suomenlinna island, on the coast of Helsinki. It is late evening in August, one of those sultry end-of-summer days when the sun already sets low enough to create a warm evening light. The surface of these big trees is like the shield of an old turtle and children can use it to skillfully climb to the lower branches. The chearers are eagerly waiting for their turn.
