Oil colour on 22 x 27 cm cardboard canvas.
This was intended to be in impressionistic style and I have to say: that is challenging! My brain tends to fight it. "Now, don't straighten that line!" And wouldn't you know, you're already doing it, at least a bit. "Leave that shape as it is!" Well guess whether I will... On the other hand, one should acknowledge that imprecision and loose style was not a licence to muddle for the impressionists but instead, each brush mark was deliberate, each tone premeditated. To learn that I have long ways to go.
It is also terribly fascinating to paint the whole thing in one day, all the time wet-on-wet. By this time, expanding to the use of oils was a revolutionary moment to me, anyway. How awesome is that when all your previous strokes are fully adjustable and you can move colour along the surface like butter on a bread. The colours themselves are bright and shiny, and they mix together completely differently from acrylics. A lot of basic painting is so much easier on oils. Nevertheless, I'm still not fully giving up acrylics.
I used a screencapture from a movie (or series?) that I no longer remember, unfortunately. The reference is there only loosely. In the original capture it's raining quite heavily and my initial plan was to paint the rain in too. But suddenly I faced a problem as I had gotten the painting upto this point: it had started to resonate with me quite strongly as it was. The street is flooded, coats are wet—umbrellas are still open because it's about rain some more very soon. My Instagram audience suggested quite unanimously to leave the work as it was. Thank you! So, I'll look forward to including an impressive rain in some upcoming painting.
